It’s that time of the year again where ESL is hosting their famous New York tournament, this time for CSGO. Eight fantastic teams are going to battle it out over a $250,000 prize pool. It’s not just the prize money that matters, for many teams, this will be a chance to prove that they are still a top team that can compete at the highest level.
The first two days of the event will be played using the Swiss system that will determine the four advancing teams. The opening group matches are already decided, but after that, each team will face a random team that has the same amount of wins that they have not yet faced. Accumulating three wins means you advance to the playoffs, three losses and you’re out.

VP vs. Fnatic
This will be the first time we see the new Fnatic roster play at a LAN tournament and against VP no less. Fnatic underwent some of the most unexpected roster changes in CSGO history and since then we’ve only seen them play online. Virtus.Pro meanwhile has kept the same roster for over two years now despite many ups and downs.
Natus Vincere vs. Team Liquid
If you keep up to date on the roster changes in the CSGO scene, you’ll know s1mple is now playing on Na’Vi, and he’ll be facing his former teammates Team Liquid in the opening round of ESL New York. Team Liquid are looking very shaky with several losses to their NA colleagues C9 and Echo Fox. In an attempt to fill the huge spot left by s1mple, Liquid have added Danish player p1mp, and this will be their first LAN tournament with him. While this may just be a BO1, it will no doubt be an exciting one, and Natus Vincere hasn’t been playing too well either. While many might think that Natus Vincere will steamroll this one, it could very well go either way.
G2 vs. Astralis
Both G2 and Astralis are teams that have everything they need to win a championship, yet they’ve been showing disappointing results tournament after tournament. G2 did play well up until early July while they’ve since been showing mediocre results. They did clinch the 2nd place at Starladder, but their group and playoffs route was fairly easy.
Astralis have since their formation in January not won a single tournament, and their best tournament result was a 2nd placement at ESL Expo Barcelona in February. They’ve tried to remedy their bad performance by adding Kjaerbye, but looking at results since then this did not help solve any of their problems. This is a tournament where G2 and especially Astralis need to prove that they are capable of winning. This match could very well indicate which of these teams will make it into the playoffs, and which one will fail to make it out of the groups.
